The Ryleyev Story: Words Can Undo Your Work or Efforts

NARRATIVE

Kondraty Ryleyev was condemned to death by Czar Nicholas I after the failed Decembrist uprising. At the gallows, the rope snapped — by custom, grounds for a pardon.
Rather than kneel, Ryleyev mocked Russia for not knowing how to make rope. Word reached the Czar. The pardon was torn up. He was hanged the next day.

LESSON LEARNED
Your words can undo your work or efforts. Even when fortune breaks your way, pride can hand it right back.
HOW TO APPLY

Know when you’ve already won. When fortune breaks your way, step back. Silence is often the smarter next move.

Guard your mouth in high-stakes moments. In conflict or crisis, the mouth that stays closed loses nothing. Speak only what serves you.

Never mock the hand that holds your fate. Even righteous contempt, voiced to the wrong the people can be held against you.
