Health – burning fat

Foods and Tips to Activate Brown Fat and Burn White Fat based on me listening to this podcast

Brown fat is a type of fat in the body that generates heat and burns calories, making it an excellent ally for weight management. The following foods and habits can help activate brown fat and improve overall metabolic health:

Foods That Activate Brown Fat

1. Tomatoes

• Eat one tomato per day.

• Cooking tomatoes at 190°F for 20 minutes increases their nutrient absorption and boosts metabolism.

2. Pure Pomegranate Juice

• Drink 8 ounces daily to support brown fat activation and benefit from its rich antioxidants.

3. Kiwi

• Eat one kiwi per day.

• Add the skin to your smoothie for extra fiber and nutrients.

4. Matcha

• Add matcha green tea powder to smoothies or beverages.

• Matcha is rich in catechins, which may help boost metabolism.

5. Dark Chocolate

• Choose chocolate with at least 80% cocoa content to support fat burning.

6. Soy Nuts

• Incorporate soy nuts into your diet as a healthy, protein-rich snack.

7. White Navy Beans

• Eat 1 cup, 5 times per week for their high fiber and resistant starch content, which promotes fat burning.

Lifestyle Tips to Maximize Brown Fat Activation

1. Stay Active

• Move around frequently throughout the day. Regular physical activity helps stimulate brown fat activity.

2. Portion Control

• Avoid going for seconds.

• Eat only 2/3 of what you normally would, allowing your body to feel satisfied rather than overly full.

3. Embrace Canned and Preserved Foods

• Use tinned foods like fish and legumes, especially during off-seasons.

• Pair with sourdough bread for balanced meals.

4. Shop Local

• Buy locally grown produce to ensure freshness and support gut health.

5. Avoid Harmful Substances

• Keep “weird” or overly processed ingredients out of your diet. Stick to whole, natural foods.

Foods and Drinks to Avoid

1. Soda (Including Diet Soda)

• Artificial sweeteners disrupt gut microbiota and hinder metabolism.

2. Health Bars and Packaged “Healthy” Foods

• Often ultra-processed, these contain synthetic ingredients that negatively affect health.

3. Processed Meats

• Classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the WHO.

• Commonly made with nitrates and “meat glue,” which are harmful to health.

4. Bottled Water

• Bottled water can shed microplastics, which enter the body and accumulate in organs.

• Opt for reusable ceramic or glass containers instead. Avoid microwaving plastic.

5. Airplane Water

• Avoid drinking coffee, tea, or tap water on planes. The tanks are rarely cleaned, posing health risks.

Immediate Steps to Boost Fat-Burning

1. Drink Cold Water

• Cold water stimulates brown fat, especially when paired with black coffee or tea (avoid dairy).

2. Cut Out Processed Foods

• If you can’t make it yourself at home, don’t eat it. Stick to whole, unprocessed foods.

3. Eat Slowly and Moderately

• Eat until you feel satisfied, not full, to allow your body time to process satiety signals.

4. Move More

• Incorporate consistent movement throughout the day to support metabolism.

Additional Tip: Cold Plunges

• Exposure to cold temperatures, such as cold plunges or ice baths, can activate brown fat by mimicking hibernation processes. This helps burn white fat and improve metabolic health.

By incorporating these foods, avoiding harmful substances, and adopting healthy habits, you can effectively activate brown fat and support your body’s natural ability to burn white fat.

Commitment vs. Resolution: Finding Your Path to Achieve Goals in 2025

Commitment is a firm dedication or pledge to a cause, person, task, or goal. It involves being resolute and maintaining perseverance, even in the face of challenges or difficulties. Commitment is about consistently taking actions and making decisions that align with the dedication and promise made.Resolution – A promise or pledge made by an individual to achieve a specific goal or change behavior

I am a goal setter in both my professional and personal life. Every year around this time, I set goals alone and with my kids. I used to follow this guidebook (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/bc/content/ldsorg/content/pdf/children-and-youth/PD60008890_youth-eng.pdf) for my kids’ goals, but now I simply use paper and insert it into their journals, if they can find them.

I no longer call them New Year’s resolutions; I refer to them as commitments, which are more connected to my integrity. Reflecting on my 2024 goals, I’ve realized I can improve on executing and delivering them.

This year, I’m inspired by an insight from a Mel Robbins podcast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm6oJwpuOYc). My wife introduced me to the podcast, and I’ve become a subscriber. It features various experts to help improve your life. Interestingly, the concept of taking an inventory of the “as is” to make future decisions aligns with my professional practice of assessing current and future state architectures.

Mel Robbins suggests asking seven critical questions to guide your goal-setting process:

  1. Describe the highlights of the last year.
  2. What were some of the hardest parts of the year?
  3. What did you learn about yourself over the last 12 months? for the year? Look at both the high and lows.
  4. What are you going to stop doing?
  5. What are you going to start doing?
  6. What are you continuing doing?
  7. What can you do today to take a first step  in the new direction?

By reflecting on these questions, you’ll ensure your goals for 2025 are informed by the lessons learned in 2024.

Here are additional thoughts on 4 of the 7 questions.

Describe the highlights of the last year.  Leverage camera roll to help you rememberLeverage any monthly updates for leadership.
What were some of the hardest parts of the year?   It is ok to upset or sad about itHardest things can also be a highlight
What did you learn about yourself over the last 12 months? Look at both the high and lows. What brought you lots of happiness joy and felt good? What broke your heart? What made you scared? Is something causing you friction or frustration in your work or relationship?   What changes need to be done?  If there is too much friction or frustration, as tough as it may sound, you may not be in the right relationship, role, or in the “wrong seat in the bus.”
What are you going to stop doing?   This takes courage to say “no.”

This year, I’m doing monthly reviews of my personal goals and completing at least one task per week that contributes to achieving them. This keeps my goals in front of me and helps me stay on track. If you’re interested in sharing insights, feel free to direct message me for a call.

I’ll also write a separate post on how to complete current and future state architectures.

Happy New Year! I hope 2025 will be the best year yet for you and your loved ones.

pb – Going to 5 from 4 by avoiding these 5 mistakes

  1. Drop shot instead of driving to keep opponent away from kitchen . Keep them back. Don’t give them a chance
  2. Driving two shots in a row from the baseline. Drive at 70% power with max spin to setup for next shot
  3. Dink without intent . Need to dink into the pressurized zone vs dead zone to force indecision of opponents . Don’t try to win the point with spin. Prioritize with placement to force opponents to move. Hit in the middle and front of opponents bodies for the first 5 dinks. Hit dinks in different spot every two shots

4. Not knowing who covers the middle. Middle line is not a force field. Cover the middle if you are hitting diagonal. Use shading and paddle tracking. Shading means taking a step toward where ball was hit.

5. Hitting balls that are going out.

    PB – “Modern” pickleball

    1. 3rd shot drive (vs drop)
    2. Attack at mid court if ball is above knee (vs reset when at feet)
    3. Aggressive dinks, like using two handed back hand with top spin to force pop up
    4. Focus drilling vs ad-hoc with no purpose). Check pballdrills.app for drills (I have no affiliation and haven’t reviewed)
